Blake’s Lotaburger, the iconic New Mexico hamburger chain which has grown to more than 80 locations throughout New Mexico, Texas and Arizona, presented the Albuquerque Police Department with a monetary donation to the Spikes K9 Fund.
The APD K9 Unit has been an important part of the police department for many years with 8 total officers and K9s on active duty. In July of 2017, Nick Layman, a civilian, made the decision to use his birthday to raise money through a social media campaign for Spikes K9 Fund to benefit the Albuquerque Police Department:
“I have everything I need in the world and wanted to use my birthday to raise money for a cause I truly believe in,” Layman said. “These K9s are going into the most dangerous situations to protect us and the community, if I can help to keep them safe so they can do their jobs, I will gladly do it.”
The APD K9 Unit has been in need of new vests to protect the K9s from harm they may encounter on the job. Nick’s Fundraising efforts reached over 8.5 thousand people and raised $3,000 to purchase the vests needed to protect the K9s from potential knife wounds and bullets. Blake’s Lotaburger was proud to present a $1,500 check to the Spikes K9 Fund and to help give back to the Albuquerque community.
